Chalcolestes viridis (willow emerald Damselfly)

    Common Name(s)

    Willow emerald damselfly, Western willow spreadwing

    Distribution

    Chalcolestes viridis is found through most of Europe, except in Scandinavia and the Easternmost regions. It is also found in parts of North Africa.

    Identification

    A large and dark metallic green damselfly. Males have a long abdomen, and upper anal appendages which are pale yellow with black tips and much longer than their lower counterparts. Females have a long ovipositor. Chalcolestes viridis has light brown pterostigma which are outlined in black, narrow yellow antehumeral stripes, a broader yellow stripe above a black line on each side of the thorax, and a distinctive spur on each side of the thorax.
