Large red damselfly, Large red damsel
Pyrrhosoma nymphula can be found throughout most of Europe, parts of South-West Asia, and parts of Morocco.
These large damselflies have black legs and pterostigma. Males have red eyes and a black thorax. Their antehumeral stripes are yellow to begin with, but become red as the individual matures. Males have a red abdomen with black bands down the majority of the length, but bronze-black bands on the last few segments. Females range from mostly black to mostly red in colouration, but all have yellow abdominal bands. Females can have yellow or red antehumeral stripes.
